About Elwood
Elwood was laid out in 1885 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad pushed its line this far, and the village took its name from Elwood Thomas, a homesteader. After Daviesville and then Homerville had each held the title, Elwood won a contested vote in 1888 to become the Gosper County seat, and it has kept that role ever since. In 1939 the county raised a red-brick Art Deco courthouse on Smith Avenue, one of seven Nebraska courthouses built with New Deal help, and it is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Each summer the Gosper County Fair fills the grounds near the water tower with a rodeo, 4-H exhibits and a carnival the town owns and its volunteers run, while Elwood Reservoir and Johnson Lake nearby draw anglers, boaters and golfers. Today about 650 people live in Elwood, with a library opened in 2012 and a preschool-through-12th-grade school that is home of the Pirates.
