About Emerson
Emerson was laid out in 1881 at an important railroad junction in the hills of northeast Nebraska, took its name from the poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, and became an incorporated village in 1888. It is the only community in Nebraska that sits in three counties at once: the Dixon, Dakota and Thurston county lines meet at the corner of First and Main, where the First Nebraska Bank building stands, so a short walk along Main Street can carry you through all three. Its population climbed from 617 in 1900 to 838 by 1910 and has stayed close to that ever since. Locals love the square block of Emerson City Park between Fourth and Fifth streets, added to the National Register in 2018, and a few miles east the Ben Bonderson Farm, where an 1883 farmhouse grew in stages as Swedish-born Ben and Hilda Bonderson raised six children, is on the Register too, with its 1915 crib barn, granary and hay barn. Today about 840 neighbors share the village under its round water tower, filling the gym for Emerson-Hubbard Pirates games, fall and winter concerts and the school's Veterans Day program.
