About Emmetsburg
Emmetsburg grew out of an Irish colony: in 1856 a handful of immigrant families, the Nolans, Nearys, Hickeys, Crowleys and others, built cabins along the Des Moines River in the middle of Palo Alto County. A couple of years later settlers named their would-be town for Robert Emmet, the young Dublin patriot executed in 1803, and a statue of him now stands on the courthouse square. When the railroad platted a new town nearby in 1874, the businesses of "Old Town" literally picked up and moved, and the new Emmetsburg became the county seat the next year. That Irish heart never faded: St. Patrick's Day grew from a small parade of men in green derbies into a three-day celebration, and in 1962 Emmetsburg and Dublin, Ireland, declared themselves sister cities. Today about 3,700 people live around the southern bay of Five Island Lake, where families walk the Five Island Trail, splash at the city splash pad, and catch kids' movies and Lego Club at the Carnegie-built public library.
