About Epworth
Epworth was laid out in 1855 by three settlers on their own land, among them Zephaniah Kidder, a Maine man who had tried California before coming to Iowa, and it took its name from the English village where John Wesley was born. Faith and schooling shaped the place from the start: Kidder helped found the Methodist Epworth Seminary, and in 1872 the town's Methodist minister, Lewis Hartsough, finished the gospel song "I Am Coming, Lord" during a revival here, a hymn that went on to be sung across England and, in Welsh as "Gwahoddiad," all over Wales. In 1932 the Society of the Divine Word opened a mission seminary on the old Methodist seminary grounds, and in the 1960s it raised a building two football fields long for Divine Word College, which now draws students from more than 20 countries to this small town. Kidder's 1868 brick house still stands near the center of town, and the 1917 Epworth School, torn down in 2011, gave its lot to Tower Park. Today Epworth, about 12 miles west of Dubuque on U.S. 20, is home to Western Dubuque High School and has grown past 2,000 people.
