About Estherville
Settlers reached the bend of the West Fork of the Des Moines River in 1856 and 1857, and the little settlement took its name from Esther Ridley, one of its first women; by 1859 it had been picked as the seat of Emmet County, and it was incorporated in 1881. Scandinavian, German and Irish families built the town, and many of today's residents descend from them. On May 10, 1879, a meteorite weighing hundreds of pounds slammed into the ground a few miles north of town, and pieces of it can still be seen at the public library and the chamber office, while a statue of it breaking apart in flight greets drivers at the crossroads of Highways 4 and 9. Families love the Carnegie Library on Library Square, which dates from 1903, the 1933 Rock Garden by the river in Mickelson Park, and the trails of Fort Defiance State Park, named for an 1860s fort that once stood in town. Today 'the Ville' is home to about 5,900 people, the main campus of Iowa Lakes Community College, and a calendar of Sweet Corn Days, Thursday downtown markets, a Fright Hike in the woods and Holiday in the Ville.
