About Eustis
Eustis got its start in 1886, when the railroad came through this stretch of Frontier County, and it took the name of Percy Sprague Eustis, a railroad official. Two years later, in 1888, it was incorporated as a village. The little place kept growing for decades, from 145 people in 1890 to a high of 497 in 1930, with Main Street and a grain elevator along the tracks at its heart. A grocery and sausage-making building known as Der Wurst Haus is one of the downtown sights photographers have recorded. Eustis sent two notable sons out into public life, Ralph G. Brooks, a Nebraska governor, and Clayton Yeutter, a U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Today about 389 neighbors live along Nebraska Highway 23, and the Eustis-Farnam schools, home of the Knights and the Bulls, keep the winter calendar full of games, one-act plays and concerts.
