About Evansdale
Evansdale grew out of farm country on the east edge of Waterloo, where the Evans and Richards farms met at a spot once called Evans Crossing, home to County School #1. In the early 1900s C.C. Wolf put up the Elk Run Hotel facing the Cedar River, and Illinois Central trains carried weekend crowds out to its ballroom and dining room. After the hotel faded, the Home Acres Land Association and the Casebeer Heights summer resort turned the land into neighborhoods. A shared drainage problem after World War II pulled those neighborhoods together, and in 1947 residents voted to incorporate, naming the new town for District Judge William T. Evans; the first council meeting was held in a borrowed chicken house. Today about 4,500 people call it home, with a public library on North Evans Road that began as a volunteer effort in 1968 and still hosts cribbage, crafts and game nights.
