About Ewing
Ewing's story starts in May 1870, when James Ewing's covered wagon stopped near the forks of the Elkhorn River and the family built a sod-corn homestead. When the railroad pushed out to this spot in 1882 the village was platted and took the name of that same first postmaster. Then, in 1911, the seven Savidge brothers built and flew one of Nebraska's first airplanes right here and went barnstorming across the Midwest, and one of them is credited with introducing skywriting. Their story is painted on a downtown mural on East Nebraska Street. Today about 370 people call Ewing home along Highway 275, gathering for FunFest on Memorial Day, the Christmas parade and church suppers, and its kids now go to school with Summerland neighbors.
