About Exeter

Exeter owes its name to the alphabet: when the Burlington railroad pushed west from Lincoln in 1871 it named stations in order, Crete, Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont, and a local family from Exeter, New Hampshire, supplied the one that fit. Dr. H. G. Smith had already claimed free Homestead Act land here in 1870 and gave ground for the town. By 1878 there were sixteen businesses, a newspaper, a doctor and a hotel, and the village incorporated in 1879. The depot is gone and passenger trains no longer stop, but the main line and U.S. Highway 6 still run through. Today about 500 people share a city park with an aquatic center, a firemen's barbecue and street dance in summer, and the historic St. Stephen's Catholic Church among turn-of-the-century homes.
