About Fairbury
Fairbury grew up around a sawmill on the Little Blue River. In 1869 two settlers each gave 80 acres for a townsite and named it after McDowell's hometown of Fairbury, Illinois. For almost thirty years, from 1885 to 1913, the Campbell Brothers Circus spent its winters here, and the Rock Island railroad later made the town the headquarters of its Western Division. Today the brick blocks around the 1890s courthouse square are on the National Register, and that square is still where the town gathers for Trunk or Treat, Santa's visit and the holiday Festival of Trees.
