About Fairfax
Fairfax got its start in 1863, when the railroad reached this spot in Linn County and the town was laid out beside the tracks, taking its name from Fairfax County, Virginia. For most of a century it stayed a small farm town; the 1940 census counted just 262 people. In 1954 the Fairfax School, which then taught children through tenth grade, became one of the three schools that founded the College Community School District, and today Fairfax students attend the district's Prairie schools, home of the Hawks. The American Legion Hall, built in 1947, is still a main gathering place in town, and the public library on Vanderbilt Street, built in 1998, lends books, puzzles, games and even cake pans and hosts a weekly Kids Story Time. Sitting on U.S. Route 151 about seven miles southwest of downtown Cedar Rapids, Fairfax has grown fast, from 889 residents in 2000 to 2,828 in 2020.
