About Fairmont
Fairmont was platted in 1871 when the Burlington line pushed west from Lincoln, its name picked to fit the alphabetical string of stations from Crete and Dorchester to Exeter, Fairmont and Grafton, and chosen for the town's fine, slightly raised setting. For a while it was the end of the line, so lumber and brick for Geneva and York came through its depot, and by the fall of 1872 it already had a school, hotels, lumberyards and its first newspaper. In 1884 local investors started the Fairmont Creamery, which was soon churning thousands of pounds of butter a day and buying creameries across the region before moving its offices to Omaha in 1907; its 1884 brick office on 6th Avenue now holds the Fillmore County Museum. During World War II the Fairmont Army Airfield south of town trained bomber crews, and neighbors fed the airmen home-cooked meals, opened a USO and held dances for them. Today about 600 people live here, village business is done in the little 1929 Mission-style telephone exchange with its red tile roof, and Fillmore Central's middle school sits on F Street.
