About Falls City
Falls City was laid out in 1857 by free-state settlers on the Big Nemaha River and named for the falls there, a four-foot rock ledge; a monument to those falls has stood at the north edge of town since 2020. Its downtown along Stone Street, now a National Register historic district, is the scene native son John Philip Falter painted for a 1946 Saturday Evening Post Christmas cover, and a museum in his name opened downtown in 2015. A few blocks away, the Falls City Library & Arts Center keeps the Stalder Gallery, where art by area artists has been gathered for more than 120 years.
