About Farley
Farley grew up along the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad in the 1850s and took its name from the line's superintendent, becoming an incorporated city on June 23, 1879. A photo of Main Street from 1898 shows a church steeple, picket fences and bare trees lining a dirt road, the kind of town that calls itself the "Heart of the Cornbelt." Farm country here raised some big minds: geologist and anthropologist W J McGee, born in Farley in 1853, learned in a one-room schoolhouse north of town before mapping 17,000 square miles of northeast Iowa, and the priest-poet Raymond Roseliep, born here in 1917, became a master of English haiku. The red-brick spires of St. Joseph's Catholic Church still rise over the rooftops, and 300 Raceway's 3/8-mile dirt oval draws racing fans to town. Today Farley is home to Drexler Elementary and Drexler Middle School, and it keeps growing, from 1,334 people in 2000 to 1,766 in 2020.
