About Fayette
Fayette carries the name of the French nobleman who helped win the American Revolution, and it grew up around an idea rather than a crossroads: in 1854 a neighbor named Elizabeth Alexander suggested her husband help build a college, and he backed it with a gift of $10,000. Her son-in-law added land, and by January 1857 students were sitting in a three-story limestone hall that still stands on the hill. That school, now Upper Iowa University, has shaped the town ever since, even sending its young men off to the Civil War with a hand-sewn flag. Today about 1,250 people live in this little city on the Volga River, with the state recreation area just to the north. Neighbors share the North Fayette Valley schools, and the library on State Street hosts movie nights, chess, and a Main Street Candy Crawl.
