This week in Firth
About Firth
Long before Firth had houses, a 'courthouse square' was marked out here before 1860, and the park in the middle of the village still sits on that spot. The town itself came with the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad, whose rails reached Lincoln in 1872; the post office opened that December and took the name of Frank Firth, the young superintendent who died at 25 that year after a locomotive crashed through a bridge near him. Firth was incorporated on January 20, 1879, and within two years it was one of the busiest grain markets on the line, known for the Kilbourne Brothers' 'Golden Crown' flour. The Firth Reformed Church, organized in 1890, still has more than 250 members, and in 1964 Firth helped form the Norris School District, whose Titans now learn on one campus just outside town. Today about 650 people live in Lancaster County's southernmost community, where a tall concrete elevator and a ball-topped water tower rise over the brick fronts of Third Street, with Lincoln and Beatrice an easy drive away.
