About Forest City
Forest City started out in 1855 under the plain nickname Puckerbrush, until surveyor Robert Clark renamed it for the woods it had been carved from. Swedish and Norwegian families settled here because the rolling, wooded land felt like home, and once town leaders talked the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad into coming through, churches, banks and shops followed. In 1903 a hotel left empty after a local hotel rivalry became Waldorf College, and the buff-brick Winnebago County Courthouse, finished in 1896 with its tall clock tower, still anchors the county seat. In 1958 John K. Hanson and other neighbors brought in a travel trailer factory to steady a struggling economy, and it grew into Winnebago Industries, whose motorhomes made the town's name known on highways everywhere. Today families climb the stone lookout tower at Pilot Knob State Park, tour the columned Mansion Museum, and ride the Hanson Trail, while about 4,300 people call Forest City home.
