About Fort Calhoun
Lewis and Clark held council with Oto and Missouria leaders on August 3, 1804 at a bluff they named Council Bluff, near today's Fort Calhoun. Troops arrived in late 1819 and wintered at Cantonment Missouri on the river bottom; in 1820 they built the permanent post on the bluff and named it Fort Atkinson.
