About Fort Omaha
The post began as a supply depot for forts along the Platte River and served as headquarters of the Army's Department of the Platte from 1878 to 1881. Ponca Chief Standing Bear and his companions were held here before the 1879 trial Standing Bear v. Crook, in which Judge Elmer Dundy ruled that an Indian was a person within the meaning of the law.
