About Fosston
The first settlers reached the Fosston area in 1876 in covered wagons, bringing a few cattle, oxen, horses and mules. In 1884 W. J. Hilligoss bought the townsite, platted four blocks and built a hotel, and the town took its name from Louis Foss, a Norwegian immigrant who moved his store here and opened the post office. Fosston grew as a busy stop on the Great Northern Railway, and in 1913 its boys won Minnesota's very first state basketball championship. Longtime mayor Arvid Clementson later spun the tall tale of Cordwood Pete, the short, feisty little brother of Paul Bunyan, and today families fill the Fosston Public Library for storytime and cheer on the Greyhounds.
