About Franklin
Franklin began in 1870 as Franklin City, named for Benjamin Franklin, and the Knight Colony out of Omaha brought its first settlers to the rolling prairie near the Republican River in the fall of 1871. The young town was named county seat, lost the honor to neighboring Bloomington in 1874, and patiently won it back in 1920; five years later the county raised a Classical Revival courthouse on 15th Avenue. The railroad arrived in 1879, and in 1881 the Franklin Academy opened as one of six Congregational academies in Nebraska, and its 1902 Dupee Music Hall still stands in the City Park as the last academy building left. The town has come back from a fire that took a third of the business district, floods, drought and a tornado, and it still counts the Rose Bowl movie theatre, the golf club and the city library among its everyday pleasures. Today about 940 people call Franklin home, a county seat where, as the city likes to say, you can count on your neighbor.
