About Garner
Garner got its start in 1870, when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad laid out a town on the East Branch of the Iowa River and named it for W. W. Garner, one of its civil engineers. It was a village of a few hundred when it incorporated in 1881, and in the years after, two young brothers named Fred and August Duesenberg fixed and sold bicycles on Main Street before going on to build some of America's most famous race cars and luxury automobiles. When neighboring Britt tried to take the county seat in the late 1890s, Garner businessmen bought a site, raised the money and handed the county a new tan-brick courthouse, finished in 1899 and still in use on State Street. A few blocks away, the 1931 Art Deco Avery Theater was built just for talking pictures, spent decades as a pharmacy, and came back to life as a movie house in 2013. Today about 3,000 people call Garner home, and every July the whole town turns out for Duesey Days, named for the brothers who got their start here.
