About Genoa
Long before there was a Genoa, Skidi Pawnee families farmed corn, beans and squash in earth lodge villages along the Loup River here. In 1857 a Mormon colony led by Henry and Sarah Hudson laid out the town as a way station on the trail west, plowing and fencing some 2,000 acres, but within two years the land became part of the new Pawnee Reservation and the settlers had to leave, their log houses turned into the Pawnee Agency. After the Pawnee were moved to Indian Territory in the 1870s, the government opened the U.S. Indian Industrial School in 1884, which grew to more than 30 buildings and nearly 600 Native students from many tribes before it closed in 1934; its brick manual training building is now the Genoa U.S. Indian School Museum, with murals painted by students and banners sent by more than 30 tribes to honor the children who were sent there. In 1990 the Pawnee Nation came home to rebury the remains of hundreds of their people at the east end of the Genoa Cemetery, and the town of about 900 still gathers for Pawnee Days, an August Indian School reunion and an old-fashioned Christmas with Santa. Wagon ruts from the Mormon Trail can still be traced in the prairie southeast of town.
