About Gilbert

Gilbert took its name from Hezekiah Gilbert, whose land the town was built on beside the railroad. For most of a century it stayed small, about 235 people in 1910 and still only 297 in 1950, then grew fast once Ames and Highway 69 put it within easy reach, reaching 1,211 by 2020. Main Street keeps the old center together: the library and community room at 207 and the Gilbert Community Historical Society's museum at 209, with its class pictures back to the 1920s and almost every yearbook. Families gather at Lions Park, Banford Park and Upstill Park, where the soccer fields and ball diamonds sit by a walking path near the elementary school. Four school buildings stand within a few blocks of each other, and the Tigers have made the town's name known across the state, especially in cross country.
