This week in Giltner
About Giltner
Giltner was laid out in 1886 by the Lincoln Land Company along the railroad and was renamed twice before the name stuck. It started as Huntington, became Bromfield when the post office worried about confusion with Hartington, and in 1895 took the name of Presbyterian minister H. M. Giltner, who founded the town's church. By 1890 it already had a newspaper, two grain elevators, a school and a lumberyard, and in 1903 its ball team was a charter member of a short-lived Central Nebraska League. In the 2000s the Giltner Area Development Corporation led a revival: a new community center in 2008, the Hornet Prep daycare in 2009, and Autumn Fest on the second Saturday of September. Today about 400 people live here, and Halloween means Trunk or Treat on Main Street.
