About Glidden
Glidden was platted in 1866 along the new railroad line west of Des Moines, and its name honors either a railroad promoter or the inventor of barbed wire. By 1868 the settlers had pooled money for a two-room schoolhouse, and the town kept investing in learning with a three-story school in 1879, a short-lived business college in 1890 and the brick school still in use since 1922. Local women's clubs started the library in 1924, and the city later took it over and built its current home beside City Hall. Glidden is the hometown of Merle Hay, the first Iowan killed in World War I, and the city now keeps a Memorial Cemetery in his name along Highway 30. Today a 100-ton painted Liberty Rock stands in Northland Park, and the town is home to an aquatic center, a wellness center in the old Glidden Graphic building, and about 1,150 neighbors.
