About Gordon
Gordon took shape in 1885, the year the railroad pushed west across the northwest Nebraska plains, and it carries the name of John Gordon, a pioneer settler; in Lakota the town is called 'deer river city'. It grew into the largest town in Sheridan County, with grain elevators rising south of downtown and a row of storefronts along Main Street. In 1922 the Gordon Women's Club, after years of raising money a few hundred dollars at a time, opened a public library in the upper room of the old fire hall, and today the Gordon City Library on West 5th Street keeps a deep collection of books by Mari Sandoz, the Sheridan County writer who chose to be buried on a hillside south of town above her family's Sandhills ranch. On North Oak Street the 1909 Lee and Gottliebe Fritz House, a Dutch Colonial Revival home rare for this part of the state, is on the National Register. About 1,500 people live in Gordon now, and families fill the stands for the Gordon-Rushville Mustangs.
