This week in Gothenburg
About Gothenburg
Gothenburg took its name from the Swedish port city: Olof Bergström, a Swedish immigrant working as a land agent for the Union Pacific, picked the townsite in 1882 and went back to Sweden more than once to lead settlers here. Long before that, a log fur-trading post on the Oregon Trail served as a Pony Express station in 1860-61; it was rebuilt in Ehmen Park in 1931 and has welcomed visitors, free of charge, since 1954. A second station, Midway, still stands on its original ranch south of town, and three wrought-iron crosses on a country cemetery northwest of town mark the graves of Swedish settlers' children, a small corner of Dawson County that stays Swedish.
