This week in Grand Island
About Grand Island
The city takes its name from a long island in the Platte River that French traders called La Grande Isle; the river island runs roughly forty miles. A party of 35 German settlers came west from Davenport, Iowa, in 1857, and for Pike's Peak gold seekers the settlement became the last place to stock up before crossing the plains.
