About Granger
Granger grew up in coal country: from the 1870s deep shaft mines were sunk across Dallas and Boone counties, and by the 1930s nine of them worked within about fifteen miles of town, though only in the fall and winter. The town incorporated in 1905, and in 1926 a young Italian-born priest, Father Luigi Ligutti, came to its Catholic parish and grew determined to get miners' families out of the cramped camp houses. His petition made Granger one of the country's New Deal subsistence homestead towns in 1934, and by December 1935 fifty modern homes stood on a few acres each just west of town, with room for big gardens during the summer months the mines sat idle. Visitors from across the country and abroad came to see it, Eleanor Roosevelt among them in 1936, and homestead families started a baseball club, a community band and a spaghetti supper that drew some 300 people. Today Granger has nearly tripled in size since 2000 as part of the Des Moines metro, and it is home to the Woodward-Granger Hawks and to a skyline everyone knows: two water towers, labeled Hot and Cold.
