About Grant
Grant was laid out in 1886, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad pushed its line onto this stretch of southwest Nebraska plains, and the new town took the name of President Ulysses S. Grant. A year later Perkins County was organized around it, and Grant has been the county seat ever since, now in the easternmost Nebraska county that keeps Mountain Time. The brick courthouse built in 1926 and 1927 greets visitors with tall Ionic columns and a carved eagle on its parapet, while Central Avenue keeps a run of historic storefronts listed together on the National Register. In 1935 the town's Garden Club talked the village board into building a park, and WPA crews spent the next few years raising its arched concrete band shell, stone gates and rock garden, where free concerts played for decades. Today Grant is home to about 1,200 people, with irrigated farm country rolling out in every direction.
