About Greeley
Greeley began in the spring of 1885, when Thomas Fox bought land in the middle of the county, hoping a town there would draw one of the railroads eyeing the unopened country. The first building went up in 1886 with a drugstore, a general store and a doctor upstairs, and a newspaper, The Independent, came out that October. The post office first said Spalding, then took the name Greeley in 1887, and the county seat moved here from Scotia in 1890. Today the 1913-14 Classical Revival courthouse still anchors the town, a National Register building made of golden limestone and tan brick. Every September, Greeley is home to the one-day Irish Festival, a tradition since 2007 that nods to the Irish colonists who settled this county.
