About Greenfield
Greenfield began with a pair of pole cabins on open prairie in 1854, and two years later Milton Munger bought the land and had it laid out around a Lancaster-style square, with alleys running from the corners and streets meeting it mid-block. The stagecoach between Des Moines and Council Bluffs stopped here until the Burlington railroad came in 1879, and after a long tug-of-war with Fontanelle the town became seat of Adair County in 1875. The red-brick Romanesque courthouse went up in 1891, and in 1896 E. E. and Eva Warren built their three-story store and opera house with its turret on the east side of the square, where traveling troupes and medicine shows once played; restored by local volunteers, it reopened in 2012 as the Warren Cultural Center. Greenfield also keeps the Iowa Aviation Museum and its Hall of Fame out at the airport, the 1920 Hotel Greenfield, and a painted Freedom Rock that gets a new patriotic mural every Memorial Day. In 1971 the whole town played itself in the movie Cold Turkey, and today about 2,000 neighbors gather on the square for farmers markets, Spook the Loop and the Festival of Lights, still rebuilding together after the 2024 tornado.
