About Greenwood
Greenwood takes its name from Silas Greenwood, a trapper and hunter who lived with his family in a dugout along Salt Creek in the early 1860s, before there was a town at all. When the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad laid its line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln in 1869, nearby farmers bought land and gave it to the railroad for a station; the depot opened in July 1870, Smith Bethel's store became the post office, and the village incorporated in 1883. Fires in the 1920s and the new highways that carried shoppers to Lincoln slowed the town down, and in 1957 the high school joined Ashland's, which is why today's students are Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays. Neighbors kept building anyway: the Woman's Club since 1929, a volunteer fire and rescue department since 1949, a library in the old McDonald grocery on Main Street since 1975, and a historical society that moved the Burlington depot into Greenwood Park as a museum. Now about 600 people live here, two miles off Interstate 80 between Lincoln and Omaha, with the co-op elevator, Bakers Candies, and a community center on Main Street where the coffee group, book club and village board all meet.
