About Grundy Center
Grundy Center grew up as the seat of a county named for Felix Grundy, the Tennessee lawmaker, and the town itself was incorporated in the spring of 1877. Its first courthouse was an eight-sided building folks nicknamed the Old Cheese Box, and in 1891 it gave way to the Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse whose slim clock tower still rises over the square. Herbert Quick, who went on to write novels about Iowa pioneer life, moved here as an eight-year-old, and the one-room schoolhouse he attended now sits in Orion Park, open on summer Sunday afternoons. Townspeople built a Carnegie library that opened in 1912, and for nearly two decades a small church college brought students to the east side of town. Today Grundy Center is a Main Street Iowa community of about 2,800, with a community-owned two-screen movie theatre, three city parks, a family aquatic center, and a calendar full of open houses, parades and holiday mingles.
