About Guthrie Center
Guthrie Center was laid out in 1856 on the South Raccoon River and took its name, like the county around it, from Captain Edwin B. Guthrie, a Fort Madison justice of the peace who was wounded in the Mexican War. The railroad reached the settlement in 1879, the town incorporated the next year, and it grew into the busy county seat of Guthrie County, passing 2,000 people by 1940. Folks here love the brick Guthrie County Courthouse with its row of white concrete fins, and a short drive north brings families to Springbrook State Park, one of Iowa's first state parks, with a spring-fed lake and stone shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The Mary J. Barnett Memorial Library on Grand Street keeps kids busy with LEGO Mania and holiday programs, and Main Street Guthrie Center looks after the downtown. Today about 1,600 people call it home, and each December the town lights up for Light the Night, with a lighted parade, a display in City Park and Santa's Village.
