About Hampton

Hampton started in June 1856, when county surveyor H. P. Allen staked out a town shaped like an "L" and set a rare double square near its center, so the courthouse and the shops would grow up side by side. County residents backed Hampton to be the county seat over a rival spot called Jefferson, and the town was incorporated in 1870. In the years that followed it built a sheriff's house and jail, the first G.A.R. memorial hall in Iowa (an 1890 chapel in the shape of a cross, with a Union soldier standing on its cupola), and in 1891 a brick Romanesque courthouse whose clock tower is topped by Lady Justice. In the 1930s the city and its civic clubs bought land at the old Beed mill pond and gave it to the state, and the Civilian Conservation Corps turned it into Beeds Lake State Park, a few miles northwest of town. Today the double square is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Franklin County Fair is still held in Hampton.
