About Harlan
Harlan was laid out in 1858 near the West Nishnabotna River and named for James Harlan, one of Iowa's early U.S. senators, and a year later it took the Shelby County seat from Shelbyville. The town grew out from its square, where merchants put up two-story brick storefronts in Italianate and Queen Anne dress, most of them before 1902. In the middle sits the 1893 Shelby County Courthouse, a sandstone Romanesque building that once carried a 130-foot tower, with the 1916 Soldier's Monument out front, while across the street the Harlan Theatre still lights its marquee in the old Long's Opera House building. Out at the county fairgrounds, the cross-shaped Floral Hall from the early 1880s is one of the oldest county fair exhibit halls left in Iowa. Today close to 4,900 neighbors fill the historic square for Harvest Fest on the Saturday before Halloween, and the library on Court Street, in its own building since 1981, keeps book clubs and family nights on the calendar.
