About Hartington

Hartington began in 1883 as a water stop on the railroad and took its name from Lord Hartington, an English statesman who had recently visited the United States. Less than a year after it incorporated, it won the Cedar County seat away from St. Helena in a hotly contested election in January 1885, and the red-brick Romanesque courthouse with its corner tower has stood on Broadway since 1891. Across the street, the 1923 Prairie School city auditorium still hosts games and gatherings, the 1915 Carnegie library is still lending books, and each July the county fair fills the fairgrounds at the edge of town.
