About Hartley
Hartley grew up around 1880 beside the new Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway in northwest Iowa, and it carries the name of John Hartley, one of the railroad's officials. Farm trade built the town: by 1900 Main Street was a row of brick storefronts with buggies lined up out front, and in 1941 the Hartley Chamber hosted the state corn husking contest, which drew more than 30,000 visitors. Residents still care for their old places, from the 1896 Patch-Eeten House, with its parquet floors and an attic water tank that gave Hartley its first running water, to the 1915 Gothic-style Cemetery Chapel at Pleasant View Cemetery, both looked after by the Hartley Historical Society. Summers mean the pool and playgrounds at ten-acre Neebel Park, nine holes at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club south of town, and the Summer Celebration parade on the first weekend of August. Today about 1,600 people live here, and Hartley is home to the elementary and high schools of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks.
