About Harvard

Harvard got its start in 1871, when the railroad pushed across Clay County and a new town took shape at the end of the line, borrowing its name from Harvard University back in Massachusetts. In 1914 the town built a Carnegie library on Clay Avenue, and it has kept its doors open since 1915. During World War II the farm fields just northeast of town became Harvard Army Airfield, where thousands of airmen trained in B-17, B-24 and finally B-29 bombers, and many local families went to work at the base. Today the old field is Harvard State Airport, and Harvard Veterans Memorial Park, dedicated in 2006 at Clay and Walnut, honors those who served. About 951 people live here, filling the year with a fire and rescue pancake feed, Old Trusty Days in September, a Trunk or Treat, church soup and turkey suppers, and downtown lights at Christmas, all while cheering on the Harvard Cardinals.
