About Hawarden
Before there was a Hawarden there was Calliope, a river settlement a mile to the north that held Sioux County's first log courthouse until Dutch settlers from Orange City carried off the records by sleigh in 1872 and the county seat moved away. When the Chicago and North Western laid its line a mile south of Calliope, a new town grew up around the depot and roundhouse; it was platted in 1882, named for William Gladstone's home at Hawarden Castle in Wales, incorporated in 1887, and swallowed its older neighbor in 1893. Rail traffic, farm trade and ice cut from the frozen Big Sioux River kept it busy, and in 1932 a local businessman's stamp scrip money drew the whole country's attention during the Depression. People here are proud that Andrew Carnegie bent his own rules to fund their library, the first such grant to a town under ten thousand, and that the 1918 brick City Hall and auditorium on Central Avenue still stands while city offices work out of the old railroad depot a block south. Up on Highway 10, Calliope Village gathers nineteen old buildings, among them the stagecoach depot and novelist Ruth Suckow's birthplace, on the very site of the first town. Today about 2,700 people live in Hawarden, and every Labor Day weekend they fill Central Park for Big Sioux River Days.
