About Hay Springs
Hay Springs began in 1885, when the railroad was extended to this spot in the Sheridan County valley, and its name comes from the hay that grew in the meadows around the springs. It was incorporated as a village that same November. Today a small downtown runs along Main Street, and the largest of three city parks, Sunset Park at the crossing of Highways 87 and 20, is dotted with wildlife sculptures carved from old tree stumps with a chainsaw. History fans visit the Heritage Center on North Baker, where the old Methodist church from 1887 sits beside a 1910 schoolhouse and a log cabin, open by appointment in summer. A park marker recalls Camp Sheridan and the Spotted Tail Agency, a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hay Springs Friendly Festival fills the last weekend of every August, and the Hawks of Hay Springs Public School give the whole town something to cheer for. About 600 people live here.
