About Hebron
Hebron began around 1869, when a colony of Disciples of Christ settled here and named their new town for the ancient city of Hebron. It became the seat of Thayer County, and its brick downtown along Lincoln Avenue grew up around a 1901 courthouse, a Carnegie-style library built in 1921 from a bequest by Lewis O. Secrest, and a 1937 post office now on the National Register. The town's favorite claim to fame sits in Roosevelt Park: the world's largest covered porch swing, built in the early 1980s from donated scrap irrigation equipment for about $240 so it could rock 32 people at once. Families stop there for reunion and wedding photos, and in 2016 the state named Hebron Nebraska's Porch Swing Capital. Today about 1,441 people call Hebron home, cheering on the Thayer Central Titans, swimming at the community pool that opened in 2022, and catching up over coffee every Wednesday morning at the Activity Center.
