About Henderson
Henderson began in 1887, when the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad pushed its tracks through York County and a town was laid out on land sold by Cornelius Regier; it took its name from David Henderson, an early settler. Mennonite families who arrived by rail, first sheltered in an immigrant house the Burlington Railroad built, shaped the farms and churches around it, and Henderson became an incorporated village in 1899. The trains stopped coming in 1941, but irrigation and local manufacturing kept the town growing, and its population roughly doubled through the 1950s and 1960s. Just north of town, volunteers have built the Mennonite Heritage Park with a replica immigrant house, a country church, a restored 1911 barn, a one-room schoolhouse and a depot replica, while in town a one-mile path circles the fishing lake. Today about 1,080 people live here, gathering each July for Community Days and each December for the Spirit of Christmas.
