About Hershey
Union Pacific rails crossed this stretch between the North and South Platte in 1866, but it took until 1892 for local farmers and ranchers to lay out a town of their own, wanting a post office and a siding to ship their wheat, hay, corn and potatoes. They named it for rancher J. H. Hershey, and the village incorporated in 1909. A tornado tore through most of the business district in 1910, yet Hershey rebuilt and kept growing, with hay, alfalfa and sugar beets rolling out by the railcar, and Swedish families, Germans from Russia, and Japanese and Mexican families all putting down roots. The Lincoln Highway, the country's first coast-to-coast road, ran right through town. Today about 650 people live here, twelve miles west of North Platte, where the white grain elevator and the round HERSHEY water tower watch over Lincoln Avenue, long Union Pacific trains roll past, and Friday nights belong to the Panthers.
