About Hildreth

Hildreth grew up where the railroad arrived in the mid-1880s, on a high level plateau of Franklin County that German immigrants had begun to farm around 1873. It took its name from Carson Hildreth, a banker and one of the owners of the townsite, and was incorporated in 1886. The village peaked at 603 people in 1907 and has settled to around 380 today, with a business district along Commercial Avenue and about fifty blocks of paved streets. The Philomath Club started a village library in 1935, and it now lives in the municipal building with the village office and fire hall. Hildreth sits about 27 miles south of Kearney, and its young people share Wilcox-Hildreth Public School, billed as one school for two towns.
