About Holdrege
Holdrege grew up around the Burlington railroad, which reached it in December 1883, and most of its first settlers were Swedish immigrants; the town still marks those roots each June with a Midsummer Festival of music, a big parade and Swedish folk dancing. The Nebraska Prairie Museum, run by the Phelps County Historical Society, keeps the area's farm and family life on display, including a room on Camp Atlanta, the World War II camp a few miles southwest, where German prisoners lived and worked on local farms. In 1944 the camp's drum and bugle corps even marched in Holdrege's Memorial Day parade, and after the war some of those men came back to make their homes in the area.
