About Holstein
Holstein began in 1882, when the railroad's depot site pulled a new town onto the prairie two miles from the older German Settlement, where farm families had gathered since the late 1860s around a saloon, blacksmith shop and dance hall. Settler Jochim Thode, who had come from New Holstein, Wisconsin, suggested naming the town for the German region so many neighbors had left behind, and within a year the main street had hotels, general stores, elevators and lumberyards. The town's history page says that German heritage still shows in its food, language, architecture and civic pride, and the Kinderfest weekend each June and the Chamber's Halloween Downtown Pumpkin Parade are hometown traditions. Along South Kiel Street, an Eagle Scout's 2012 idea has grown into the Avenue of Flags, more than 430 flags on 18-foot poles around a Freedom Rock painted by Ray Sorensen in 2017. Today about 1,500 people live in Holstein, where a volunteer-run theater in a 1948 Quonset-style building, Ridge View Raptor games and Tuesday-evening farmers markets keep the town gathering.
