About Homer

Long before the town, Ton-won-tonga stood near Omaha Creek and U.S. 77. It was the principal village of the Omaha people, lived in on and off from about 1775 to 1845 and is now a National Register site just northeast of town. The village of Homer was platted in 1874 and given the name of the Greek poet. A year later, carpenter Cornelius O'Connor finished an Italianate house southeast of town with the interior woodwork he did himself in dark walnut; it is on the National Register, and the Dakota County Historical Society keeps it open in summer and by appointment. Downtown businesses line John Street, where the village hall sits at 110 John, and a welcome sign greets travelers on U.S. 75 and 77 at the east edge of town. About 532 people live in Homer today, and Homer Community Schools, home of the Knights, stands on South 3rd Street.
